Full Description
Achilles International is a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities take part in running, walking, and other fitness activities. It was started in 1983 by Dick Traum, who was the first amputee to finish the New York City Marathon.
The main goal of Achilles International is to help people with disabilities build confidence, improve their health, and feel included through sports. They believe that everyone can participate in athletic events, no matter their physical or mental challengesHere’s what Achilles International does in simple words:
🟢 Running and Walking Clubs: They organize weekly workouts in many cities where people with and without disabilities train together.
🟢 Marathon and Race Programs: They help members join races, including big events like the New York City Marathon.
🟢 Guide Runners: Volunteers called guides run or walk beside athletes with disabilities to support and encourage them.
🟢 Youth Programs: They offer special programs for children with disabilities to help them stay active and confident.
🟢 Veterans Programs: They also support wounded military veterans, helping them recover through sports. Achilles International operates in over 25 countries around the world. Their message is about inclusion, teamwork, and empowerment—showing that with support and determination, everyone can reach their goals.
